After taking a 66-50 loss to Solomon in the opening round of the Eisenhower League Tournament, the White City Huskies came back strong to take their final two games of the tournament, defeating Elyria Christian 65-51 and taking a big 70-39 win over Flint Hills Christian to bring home 5th place.

Opening Game @ Wakefield

WC 50, Solomon 66

"Twenty-seven turnovers, twenty-one fouls and 19% shooting from the free throw line tells the story," said Coach Denny Crable after the Huskies first round loss. "We can't over come as many mistakes as what we are making. We have to get off to better starts and be more consistent."

Solomon came on strong in the first quarter, nailing 16 points while the Huskies were only able to connect on 7. The Huskies bounced back in the second quarter, outscoring the Gorillas 19-12 for Solomon to hold a slim 28-26 halftime lead. Both teams battled to a 16-16 tie in the third quarter for Solomon to take the 2 point margin into the final period. The final eight minutes of action totally belonged to the Gorillas as they outscored the Huskies 22-8 to advance them to the championship side of the tournament bracket while forcing the Huskies to the consolation bracket.

Mark Morgan started his outstanding tournament performance by leading his team in points against Solomon with 29 points. He also grabbed 9 rebounds, had 4 steals and was credited by his coach with having a very good offensive game. Tim Ince led the team in rebounding with 10 and Matt Wiebe pulled down 7 boards.

A dismal stat for the Huskies was their 19% free throw shooting, going only 4 of 21 from the charity stripe. Solomon was 14 of 18 in the fourth quarter and 19 of 25 overall for 76%.

"We have to get some scoring from more players," said Coach Crable as only four Huskies made it into the scoring column.

Ince and Morgan each had 2 blocked shots in the game for the Huskies.

Semi-final round at Solomon

WC 65, Elyria Christian 51

"I was really pleased with our effort and intensity in this game," said Coach Crable after the Friday evening semi-final win. "We played hard throughout and our energy level was quite high. I was pleased with our transition and field goal and free throw percentages were much better. It was just a good all around game for us which will hopefully give us a lift."

The Huskies came out with a great offensive effort in the opening quarter, scoring 21 point and holding their opponents to 12. The second quarter was an even match with EC taking a slight 11-10 advantage to leave the Huskies with a 31-23 lead at halftime. EC outscored the Huskies in the third quarter 18-14 to close the gap to 45-41 going into the final minutes of action. The Huskies were not to be denied the win as they outscored EC 20-10 to take the 14 point win and a spot in the consolation bracket finals.

Morgan again had a super game, leading the team with 24 points, 9 rebounds and 6 steals. Also receiving recognition from the coach for their outstanding games were Ryan Nittler who poured in 16 points and dished out 4 assists, Tim Ince who had 5 rebounds and 5 steals, Matt Wiebe who was also in double figures with 11 points and had good offensive effort, Jerod Beavers for a much improved game including pulling down 5 rebounds and Michael Miller who had 4 steals.

Coach Crable was particularly impressed with his teams play in the first and fourth quarters, having three players in double figures and their overall quarter scoring improvement.

The Huskies were 26 of 53 from the field for 49% and 12 of 19 from the free throw line for 63%.

5th place at Solomon

WC 70, Flint Hills Christian 39

"This was a good way to end the tournament," said Coach Crable after the 31 point win. "Being 2-1 was a positive and gaining some momentum. Morgan had an outstanding tournament with an average of 26 points and 9 rebounds a game. This was a very positive game where we had many players contribute. I was just pleased with our overall aggressiveness and how hard we worked."

The snow was falling outside but the Huskies kept the baskets hot in the gym as they poured in 70 points to take the win and a 2-1 finish in the annual tournament. White City took off to a good start, outscoring their opponents 21-11 and 20-12 in the first two quarters to take a 41-23 lead into the locker room at halftime. The final two quarters also belonged to the Huskies as they took the third quarter 16-5 and the final eight minutes of action 13-11 for the 31 point victory.

Four players were in double figures for White City with Mark Morgan leading the way with 25 followed by Ryan Nittler, Jerod Beavers and Tim Ince who each had 11 points. Morgan and Michael Miller each had 4 steals and Nittler had 3 of the teams 14.

The Huskies field goal percentage was 55% (31 of 56) but they continue to struggle at the charity stripe as they only connected on 7 of 17 chances for 41%.

Receiving nods from the coach for their game performances were Beavers (11 points, 5 rebounds and good overall game), Ince (11 points and field goal percentage, 5 of 8), Miller (floor game), Nittler (11 points and 5 assists) and Morgan (25 points, 9 rebounds, 4 steals, field goal percentage, 12 of 22 including 1 of 2 from beyond the arc) and also the positive play of the bench.
