WESTBROOK, Minnesota (STPNS) --        Last week the State Fair announced the addition of 32 new foods to  the expansive  menu offered at the Great Minnesota Get-Together. According to the State Fair, this year’s list of new menu items includes small plates, savory entrees, frozen confections, gluten free options,  a handful of foods on-a-stick and several unique blends of flavor and spice. In total, nearly 500 foods are available at 300 different concession locations throughout the fairgrounds.

Among the new foods are: Candied Bacon Donut Sliders — Sliced glazed donut holes with thick candied bacon and a chocolate red wine ganache. Now here’s a food that should satisfy almost everybody’s tastes. Glazed donuts,  candied bacon, chocolate and  red wine. I wonder if you have to be over 21 to buy these? Perhaps it should include a complimentary urn for your ashes.

Straight from Hawaii, Spam®Sushi, sushi rice, fried egg and wasabi rolled in nori (dried seeweed). Except for the fried egg this would probably appeal to the health conscious.

Carpe Diem — A Taiyaki (fish shaped) buttermilk miso waffle cone filled with balsamic-roasted strawberry compote and topped with vanilla ice cream, graham cracker crumble and a fresh strawberry. Sounds like something for everybody here!

If you are having an itchin for Cajun, you might want to try the Gumbo Frites, at the Ragin Cajun. It features a bed of crispy french fries topped with Ragin’s traditional New Orleans gumbo made with andouille sausage, chicken, bell peppers, onions, celery and rich roux-based sauce, the finished off with cheese and green onions. Something tells me this one might be on the spicy side!

Italian Taco — A flour tortilla baked with butter and shredded parmesan, filled with Italian sausage and mozzarella,  topped with roasted bruschetta, romaine lettuce, Caesar dressing, pesto,  pizza sauce and  parmesan cheese, and  then drizzled with a balsamic glaze. What! Where’s the pasta!

This next one comes with a complimentary AED kit. Deep Fried Nachos Supreme — Pepper jack cheese cubes coated with a mixture of crushed seasoned tortilla chips and nacho cheese, then deep-fried, covered with taco meat, guacamole, more nacho cheese and sour cream, and served with Jalapenos on the side. (Also available traditional-style without the supreme toppings) this version  does not come with a defibrillator.

Reuben Pickle Dog — A dill pickle spear with sauerkraut and Thousand Island dressing wrapped in a slice of corned beef. Where’s the Dog?

This is one of my favorites, (the name, not the dish). Burnt Butt Ends — Premium cuts of pork, seasoned with a BBQ rub, then smoked over oak and served with onions and Jalapenos. This one is probably better than it sounds.

Here’s the dog! Beer Brat Buddies — Octoberfest beer brat in a German pretzel bun with sauerkraut, chopped onions and a choice of mustards — a serving for two! I would try this one, only my full blooded German Best Friend probably would not share it because she doesn’t like sauerkraut!

Of course I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the sweeter side of fair food. For the ice cream lover, La La Palooza Sundae — Bridgemans giant retro sundae is back! Eight scoops of ice cream (two each of vanilla, chocolate, strawberry and butter brittle) covered with caramel, pineapple, and strawberry toppings, plus nuts, cherries, sliced banana and whipped cream, all served in Bridgeman’s signature souvenir goblet. I am assuming this serves at least eight people!

Minnesnowii Shave Ice — New toppings and New Exclusive “Flavor — 100 percent sweetened condensed milk drizzled over your choice of flavored shave ice for a creamy, sweet twist. Exclusive flavor also available at the State Fair: Maple bacon shave ice topped with bacon bits and a maple syrup drizzle. I mean — who doesn’t like bacon flavor!

Finally, Call it Breakfast — A vanilla malt or sundae topped with chunks of bakery-fresh donuts, drizzled with chocolate and latte flavored syrups, and finished with sprinkles. Got to have lots of sprinkles!

There are many more, but I felt these are the most outrageous or delectable of the 32 new foods.

I wonder how many calories you would consume if you would try all 500 items? Millions, tens of thousands for sure.

Have a great week and do good!
